How much regulation and capital do Swiss banks need?
Meet Our Guest
Urban Angehrn served as CEO of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) from November 2021 to September 2023. During his tenure, he was responsible for the operational leadership of Switzerland’s financial regulator, overseeing the supervision of banks, insurance companies, financial institutions, and markets.
One of the most significant events during his time at FINMA was the 2023 crisis involving Credit Suisse. As CEO, Angehrn played a central role in the authority’s response to the emergency situation that led to the state-facilitated takeover of Credit Suisse by UBS. FINMA’s oversight during this period was critical in helping stabilize the Swiss financial sector and managing systemic risk.
Before joining FINMA, Angehrn held senior positions in the private financial sector, including at Zurich Insurance Group, where he served as Group Chief Investment Officer. He has extensive experience in risk management, capital markets, and financial regulation.
Angehrn stepped down from his role at FINMA in September 2023. His departure came after nearly two years of leading the authority during a particularly demanding period for the Swiss financial system.
In 2025, Partners Group, one of the largest firms in the global private markets industry, announced the nomination of Urban Angehrn for election as an independent member of its Board of Directors, with the vote scheduled to take place at the Annual General Meeting on 21 May 2025.
